Hello,

My name is Abebitu “Abbie” Fields. I am a senior Photography major born in Ethiopia and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and I attend the illustrious Spelman College. The neighborhood I grew up in is what New Yorkers love to call ‘Bed-Stuy Do or Die, ’ also known as Bedford-Stuyvesant. A neighborhood people love to claim is “ghetto” or “dangerous.” I intend my photographs to challenge that depiction and show you the Bedford-Stuyvesant that I know and love. It’s a place Black families have built community through generations, where culture spills into the streets, where resilience is not just survival, but a source of pride. Using a blend of candid street photography and intimate portraits, I document the patterns of daily life: its beauty, the laughter shared on stoops, neighbors spending time together, and the charm of aging brownstones.
